The Experience
Upon arrival, you will receive a visitor guide and map to help you navigate the prison. Use the sound boxes to learn fascinating facts about its history, while information boards provide intriguing background details. Staff will be available to assist you and answer any questions you may have.

Start your exploration at the reception area, where prisoners were processed, then move on to the two prison wings that house nearly 200 cells. Next, visit the healthcare section to see how medical needs were addressed.

Make your way to the visits area, the only place where prisoners could meet people from outside, before walking through two exercise yards that allowed for daily fresh air. Continue on to the segregation section, where inmates were isolated from the general population, and step into the executioner’s bedroom, where Albert Pierrepoint once spent the night before carrying out his duties.

Finally, visit the condemned man’s cell, a haunting space where inmates spent their last days before facing execution.

Conclude your visit at the museum and gift shop, where you can find a variety of Shrewsbury Prison memorabilia to remember your time behind bars.
