The Experience
The Jaguar E-Type is often considered the most beautiful and important car of all time and here’s why: It was first revealed on 15 March 1961 in Geneva which drummed up huge excitement from the world’s press and gained the reputation from Enzo Ferrari as ‘The most beautiful car in the world’. Jaguar took 500 orders at the Geneva launch. The following month the car was at the New York International Auto Show and six sold in the first half-hour. “I want that car and I want it now”- Frank Sinatra.
Sir William Lyons, the founder of Jaguar, realised that he had created a legend. It’s hard to comprehend the effect this British machine had on the world in 1961, when 70mph was fast for the average family runabout, never mind the 150mph the E-type could reach. Based on Jaguar’s racing D-Type, which had won Le Mans from 1955-57, the E-type came with not only racing heritage but sophisticated front and rear independent suspension, disc brakes all round and a lightweight monocoque providing unrivalled performance at the time. Powered by a 4.2 litre version of the proven Jaguar XK engine, it developed 265bhp through the four speed synchro meshed gearbox and is capable of 0-60mph in 6.4s which is rapid by even today’s standards.
